The Château d'Aon - History
Once the Chateau was a large complex comprising most of the village of Hontanx. The whole was surrounded by a brick wall. Today all that remains are the tower which marked the main entrance to the castle, the central Keep on it’s motte and the tiny Chapelle of Saint Blaise plus the vestiges of the wall. The chapel dates from the 11th. Century but the keep and the tower were built in the 13th . The chapel is unusual in that it faces North unlike most Christian churches which usually face the East. It fell into disuse after the much bigger church was built in the village and locally farmers used it as a store and granary. In the 1980’s a group of local volunteers started restoration work which is ongoing. Currently the chapel is used as an exhibition and reception room and the keep has become a holiday complex.
